DAY 3: 365 Days Shop My Closet Challenge

Mood: Touched

Weather: Pretty warm with a cool strong breeze.

Purpose: Meeting a small group of people today/tonight in Rancho Santa Fe.

Style Savvy: I’ve been having fun with black and white again. The foundation of this outfit is my white Helmut Lang tank top because I had it on all day with a different pair of shorts. Mixing prints starts to get easier as you play and try things on. I still don’t know if a print/color pairing is going to work until I try it on. This outfit had to work from day to night, so my H&M kimono-ish coverup/jacket worked perfectly for cooler evening temps. I’m a big fan of stripes and I love how the stripes on these White House Black Market shorts gradually get wider towards the bottom of the shorts. The shorts are also lined and have pockets, these details make this piece a staple in ones wardrobe that can be worn year after year. AND stripes never go out of style!

Personal Style: If I were styling someone else in this outfit, I actually would’ve used a navy blue or white blazer with 3/4 length sleeves either cut at the waist or boyfriend style. For my personal preference, I still needed one element to satisfy my boho chic side, hence the patterned coverup.

What’s Going On With Me: Today I spent part of my day reading and responding to new comments and emails and so touched by all the kind words. Then my sister and nephew came over for a visit which turned into a quick shop at Nordstrom Rack for my sister. I didn’t have any hesitations being in the store because I’m feeling pretty okay for now. I also treated my sister as if she were one of my clients who I style and personal shop. I did find her this great Betsey Johnson dress that I knew would fit her perfectly. She tried on a hand full of items and ended up buying that dress.

Switching subjects – a few of my close family members (not my mom) aren’t really supportive of this idea or my ideas in general. They roll their eyes and think I’m lofty and that I should just give up on my ideas and dreams and just get a 9 to 5 job and/or marry a rich man. It’s hurtful and yes, if I were trying one particular thing for 5-10 years and nothing was happening, I’m realistic and would switch it up. But that’s not the case right now. I need to inspire and motivate myself just to get out of bed some days, especially now going through this divorce that I didn’t want and thought our love was strong enough to get us through anything. I’m continuing on my journey with this challenge regardless of what I hear. This is my life.

Your Words: I received a sweet letter via email from a woman who worked for me about 6 years ago. When I read it aloud to my mom, I started crying midway through it. I was just so moved. Thank you D! Another friend of mine called to tell me how she was inspired after reading about this challenge – that she looked at her wardrobe differently on Monday and put together a new outfit from her closet which received many compliments at work. I love hearing these stories, it’s so inspiring! Thank you again everyone!
