Helping the Homeless

At 5:45 PM on a warm SoCal Saturday, the 10 freeway is congested as we head towards downtown LA to bring food for the homeless and give them clothing, blankets, shoes, etc. that my girlfriends so graciously donated. Rolly has been doing this every Friday for the past seven months, took a month break and now I want to be involved.

We exited San Pedro street as the sun started to cast that magic hour glow. The streets were still and soundless. We drove into a McDonalds drive-thru ordering 25 McDoubles with cheese which didn’t take as long as I thought. Turning the corner of sixth street I could already see a crowd of people gathering at the park. We pulled our car up to the curb, parked and were assisted by several men who help coordinate this gathering – handing them the burgers and bags of clothing.

All the men and the little women that were there, dove right into the pile of goods and formed a line to get a cheeseburger. There was no chaos it was really organized and the homeless were grateful and a few very friendly. They allowed me to take some photos and one even said to me, “I’m not camera shy, you can take a picture of me.” I introduced myself to many people and chatted with them. I think a few of the older guys now have a semi-crush on me, super adorable.

As the sun started to go down we participated in a group chat and then left around 8:45 PM. As I write this blog, I feel a connection now to these people who are there everyday. Their smiles and kindness warmed my heart and for that I’m grateful.
